Movie Review: The Mist

Two words, THE ENDING… I’ll get back on that later. No worries, won’t tell you what happened. ;-)

So i watched The Mist today. Seriously I’m no horror movie fan but if the story is good enough, my eyes won’t really close. :-) After my early thoughts of the movie, I’m all excited. The moment i start watching the movie, I was glued. Damn, this movie is good. First and foremost, I have to mention the storyline a bit.

“The Mist takes place in a Maine town where a thick mist engulfs the area, killing those caught in its darkness. Terrified survivors seek refuge in a supermarket, while a swarm of murderous critters tries to get in.” - MovieWeb

Thomas Jane(Deep Blue Sea, The Punisher) stars as David Drayton who is the hero and one of the survivors in the supermarket alongside his son. In the beginning, nobody really knows what this mist is all about other than those who are trapped in it will die. As the survivors try to calm down and find out whats going on, they started to encounter dangerous lifeforms from the mist that starts to kill those who venture out of the supermarket. Things also start to get out of hand, when the survivors discover that the supermarket they’re in is not that well protected from these lifeforms. But worst of all. there is a lady by the name of Mrs. Carmody(a religion extremist) starts telling the survivors that she believes the mist is an act of god to signal the end of the world. Everything went all wrong when Mrs. Carmody managed to convince most the survivors of her belief and that some people should start to be sacrificed to the mist in order to get the mercy of god. This created chaos within the supermarket itself as David Drayton and a small band of people who is against Mrs. Carmody must find a way to escape from the supermarket and the mist.

The movie casts are amazing in this movie. Thomas Jane was perfect as the hero and you really feel his struggle towards the end to protect his son and lead the people out of the chaos that is happening around. Marcia Gay Harden(Into The Wild, The Invisible) acts as a very believable Mrs. Carmody. Trust me when i say that you’ll be swearing at her character a lot or simply have this strong urge to slap/punch her on the face. Yeah, you will! She deserves at least a nomination in the academy awards.

With the support of such an amazing cast, the story was told beautifully. Although there are some moments that you might find a little draggy or unnecessary, you’ll find out that everything makes sense as the movie progress. Visuals and special effects are not much to shout about but the dangerous lifeforms was portrayed well enough for you to be scared and wonder what they really are. The whole movie is very tensed to watch with the encounters of the dangerous lifeforms plus the drama and chaos going on created by Mrs. Carmody. Did i mention how much you gonna hate her?

After watching everything, i walked out from the cinema 90% satisfied. Wheres the other 10%? Back to what i typed earlier, THE ENDING. Some people might say its good or some might say its bad. I find it DAMN FRUSTRATING. Babe watched it with me and she agreed. And she loves horror movies especially this one. Still, please watch this movie regardless of what I think of the ending. A not to be be missed Stephen King’s masterpiece. A job well done by Frank Darbont(The Green Mile) who is the director and also screenplay writer to this movie. Salute!

the Mist is a thinker for sure, pretty good all around, except a lot of the character conflict was really predictable…

is it me, or did those insect-like aliens have human teeth?
